What is a sentence counter?

A sentence counter counts how many sentences are in a piece of text. Paste or type anything — an essay, a speech, an article, a social media draft — and the count updates live as you edit. This page also counts words, characters (with and without spaces) and paragraphs, so it works as a combined sentence, word and character counter in one place.

How sentences are counted

Sentences are detected by their ending punctuation: periods, exclamation marks, question marks and ellipses. Two common traps are handled for you: abbreviations such as Dr., Mr. and e.g. do not end a sentence, and neither does the decimal point in numbers like 3.14. If your text ends without punctuation, the last fragment still counts as one sentence.

Why count sentences?

Sentence count drives average sentence length (words ÷ sentences), one of the simplest readability checks. Writing that averages roughly 15–20 words per sentence is noticeably easier to follow than writing averaging 30+. Writers use a sentence counter to spot run-on passages, teachers use it to verify assignment requirements, and speakers use the speaking-time estimate to rehearse talks and presentations.

FAQ

Is it free? Yes, completely free, no sign-up, no length limit.
Is my text private? Yes. All counting happens locally in your browser — nothing is sent to a server or stored anywhere.
